In the middle of doing my cycle for the first time in a saltwater aquarium. Just out of curiosity why is this not as necessary in freshwater? I remember growing up we would buy a tank. Tank the chlorine out of the water. And in the fish would go. Was this just bad?

Unlike the process in freshwater, you are preparing the environment for fish & corals in which the Nitrogen cycle is a process in which the water goes through several biological changes that results in it being chemically balanced to sustain life. Essentially, the core of the nitrogen cycle is bacteria but not just any bacteria. Specific microbes convert and release nitrogen in a dangerous form, while others extract these compounds and reconvert them into a non-harmful element.

I'm also new to reefing and about to cycle my first tank, but I've kept freshwater tanks for years. The freshwater hobby currently is as adamant about cycling as saltwater. However, I think that the damage of years of giving goldfish away for next to nothing has planted much deeper roots in the mentality of uncycled freshwater tanks.

In short, talk to a current FW hobbyist and I think they'd strongly disagree with not cycling the tank in most cases.

That makes total sense, I just remember growing up we would set up a tank, go into the fish store and most of the fish they would say it was fine to buy. Now that I am getting into salt water there are 20 minute YouTube videos about how to cycle a tank and it was such a difference I was curious why. Makes sense that the fresh water community is in the same boat now, it is has been a very long time since I bought a fresh water fish.
