im really new to this saltwater tank thing. I'm looking to see what's a good way to filter the water. Should I just go straight into a sump tank setup or are there cheaper/easier solutions?

Hang On Back Skimmer, theres no need for a mechanical filter on a salt water tank.
Going with a sump, is like going pro right off the bat, its a great thing to have, but its not necessary.

Awesome, that's what I needed to know. Any recommendations on good hang on which hang on back skimmer to get?

Or be crazy like me and use a skimmer and cannister because u r ....crazy! Muh-haw-ha-hahahhah.

You can go hob but I'd recommend a sump if you can. They are so much easier to work with regarding maintenance and all of your equipment is hidden. Good luck!!

Agree! That would probably look much cooler!

I have a 29 gallon i only run a penguin 350 with bio wheels removed. My media is ploy filter from walmart, filter floss, carbon in a nylon bag and purigen. But it depends on how big your tank is i would not run a hob only unless its 40 gallons or under. This is probaly the cheapest way you can go.
