Can you mount an fx6 canister slightly lower maybe 4 inches or mounted directly beside or behind your tank?

No room under the tank? I would think as long as the water will flow down from the tank into the filter then you're good to go.

This is the area I'm looking at

No it's completely closed off. The previous owners added a party room.

+1, you'll be fine. If you go above the waterline it'll change the dynamics a bit but the only real draw back would be getting the air out after opening it to change media.

I wonder if I sit it offset of the fireplace if it will be "ok" off center

So it should be ok just sitting directly behind the tank then good
You bet. Cut the hoses to just the right length. Do yourself a favor and use the snap on hose mounts that come with the unit. They’ll keep your hoses in place. They seriously “snap” on to your tank rim with a pop! :)

I'm not following friend. The tank or the FX offset?

Either way filter should be good. As for the looks of the tank, if you have it too low, as in setting in the hole of the fireplace that'd probably ruin the view. That's just my opinion though. I would highly highly recommend you place everything in a way that makes it easy to get to for maintenance. It's hard enough to motivate yourself to stay ontop of the needed maintenance in the long run when it's easy, impossible if it's hard.

Again, my opinion that is.

I agree with making maintenance easy. That's my thought if I need to offset the tank from the fireplace itself so I can access the pump easily or if I set the tank in front of the fireplace will it be a hassle to access.

Got ya, I'd see about offsetting the tank. The FX will work fine setting beside the tank.

I'd love to see the tank progress as you go.
Consider starting a build thread.

Best of luck with your reef friend.
