Hey guys, so my 55 FOWLR tank is heating up to 89 almost 90. I Ilive in southern California and it's super hot these days. And I cant get a chiller atm. What can I do to reduce the temperature? Remove the lids? put a motor fan on the surface of the water? 55 gallon only has 1 zebra lionfish. can lionfish survive high heat?

Turn off lights and any unneeded pumps that put off a lot of heat. Yes, take the lid off and get a fan on the surface will help a lot. Finally, freeze some RODI in some water bottles and put them in the tank.

Lionfish can tolerate warmer waters but 90 is rather warm. They have literally become a pest in FL waters. How are you measuring the temp? Is this all that's in your tank. Any corals?

All i have in the tank is 1 zebra lionfish, snails, and a couple of zoanthids. I was originally gonna make this a full out reef tank , but it was too pricy... haha.... yea so I just a got 1 zebra lion, planning to get more later. I measure my temperature from the little cheap thermometer in the tank that costs like $4.

Is the tank near a window and/or on an external wall? If so and you can move it to an interior location away from windows, that might help get away from the exterior heat. Could also try getting a window fan for the room the tank is in (if there is a window). When we added window fans to our house for a time, it dropped the temp by ~5F (we ran the fans at night to pull cool air in, then closed up the house during the heat of the day to help keep that cool air in as much as possible).

What about small water changes with slightly lower-temp water? While temporary in nature, perhaps that would help get through the hotter of days?

hmm, yea my tank is actually next to the window, but it does not get direct sunlight.

A simple fan should help your tank out allot. You could get a stc 1000 and connect it to a fan and your heater and it will keep the temp stable for you. As said taking the lid off will also help.

Do you have a AC in your house?
If so work the AC.
My AC is set on 73 during the day and my tank stays at around 78.5 even when my 8 T5's come on.
