Aquarium Maintenance Service

I was thinking about doing aquarium Maintenance on the side from my regular job. I put an ad on Craiglist to test the market and already got a response for a tank install.

My question is about liability. I read that with being licensed, bonded and insured with a LLC, as well as putting proper language in the contract policies and procedures, does this limit the risk in case of water leak and damage at customers house?

Certainly do an LLC. This will protect your personal assets (like your house) from law suits. The company itself will have minimal assets, so no real loss. It's relatively easy to do an LLC yourself for a couple hundred bucks....look into your state laws on what is needed. Typical is filling a company name and then the LLC.

I would suggest consulting a lawyer in your specific area. Many of us are going to have different policies and codes concerning such documentation and protections depending on where we live. I'm not sure what would be available in your area, but I know in my area that we have a small business development council sponsored by our local state university that is made up of lawyers, consultants, etc. that help small business owners get off of the ground and make sure they are meeting all required documentation and such.

It could also be something as simple as a liability waiver but I would make sure before doing anything major outside of friends and family. Nothing like a lawsuit can ruin something you love!

Sounds like the author does well and has the LLC, bonded, licensed and insured with proper verbiage in the policies and procedures. Not sure of the location. I will check for my area.
