This is great!

# 5 - Nitrates are the last product of the nitrogen cycle (OK!) "and are not naturally removed from your water."

False! , Nitrates can be removed very easily naturally.[FONT=arial, sans-serif]

julio, Skimmers aren't natural, algae scrubbers aren't natural, algae in a refugium absorbs Nitrates but the Nitrates aren't removed until you harvest the algae, so using algae for export also isn't natural. Nitrates are not NATURALLY removed from our tank water, through any means, without our human intervention. Ammonia is reduced to Nitrites, Nitrites reduced to Nitrates, all without human intervention. That's where it stops...

Algae scrubbers aren't natural !!!! :faint2: I inmagino the face of Mr Walter Adey reading this thread.

Walter Adey

Three natural names............

Dr Jean Jaubert - inventor of the Plenum Method

Walter Adey - scientist inventor of the Algal Turf Scrubber (ATS)

Peter Wilkins -biologist inventor of the Berlin Method

These are natural systems, now considering the argument ....... "without human intervention" , and the plenum ?.....or plants (example Mangrove) ?

You forgot de-nitrification into nitrogen gas which is then gassed off into the atmosphere.

Actually Nitrates could be naturally removed using mangroves. Although, you would need a good amount of them for it to have an actual impact on Nitrate removal.

Do Algae scrubbers naturally occur in our aquariums or do we humans place them there? Human interference, not natural. As I said, Ammonia is reduced to nitrites WITHOUT human interference...Nitrites are reduced to Nitrates WITHOUT human interference... To reduce Nitrates requires human interference...
