Thanks for all your answers. This weekend I'm going to do some testing and see what happens. Though it's common sense in hindsight, I had not considered the return pipe continuing to siphon water from the tank on power loss. I was worried about the drain, not the return. Thanks for all the great insight and help on this matter! You probably saved me thousands of dollars of water damage!
