I am getting and 96 by 24 by 24 tank how many gph submersible pump do i need for return and any brands you would suggest that are good

You talking under tank stand, fish room or basement? There are no shortage of DC and AC pumps that can handle an under stand sump - varying degrees of reliability and costs. Fish room or basement would be different and require more info to figure out.

Personally, I use Laguna or Fluval pumps with the time-tested Askoll block from Italy that usually last me more than a decade. I have not met a DC pump that is reliable enough for me yet and I have no reason to lower or raise flow.

I would look to turn that 240 over about 1000 to 1250 GPH - I am about a 4-5x guy and not a 10x guy.

Its under the stand sump

Maybe too much depending on how your sump is set up. If you have a smaller sump with a refugium in there, then 1800 GPH might be way too much to run through it. Factor in the fuge throughput too.

If I got the math right, you have about 240 gallons of tank volume, not including a sump.

I would go with 2x ~1,200gph pumps, which after head & plumbing losses should give you about 5x tank volume turnover per hour. Assuming the top of the tank is 4-5 feet off the floor.

Two of the Reef Octopus Varios-6 would be great pump’s for you. They have a high enough rating you could run them a less than full speed.

Advantages include: Redundancy of using 2, variable speed, Apex control capable, efficient battery backup, very reliable & low voltage 24VDC powered.

I trust your opinion on this. You are well respected and I trust your methods. Your results speak for themselves. I've run AC pumps in the past with great success. You plug them in and they work. The Fluval you're referring to is the SP (sump pump) series, correct? I understand they use higher quality components than other brands using an Askoll block.
