Hey guys just getting back into the hobby, I am looking at getting a new tank just to hold me over for 2-3 years till i am about to build my custom tank in my new house.

What are peoples though on just getting a standard tank and equipment or would a Red Sea Reefer be a good idea? and then later on just use that as a back up tank once the custom one is made?

I started back with a 40 AIO, that lasted 3 months and jumped to a 75, By the time you spend to get it where your want to be, you'll wish you did it the first time. BTW a red sea is a serious setup , now i'm wondering what is your custom ?

There's so many good all in one setups these days that weren't around just a few years ago. They are a great way to get back in IMO.
I would go with one that comes with a sump vs the ones that have the filter compartment behind the display.
The Red Sea are very nice setups.

Thanks guys, ya my dream tank is around 400-450g i had a tank made for me that was 330g + 150g sump 4 years ago and it has been in the basement every since but this year i sold my house and the tank with the house seeing the new place dose not have a walk in basement so no way of getting the tank out lol.

I would go with something like deep blue professional or marineland why break the bank if it's only for 2-3 years. once you don't use is as something or sell it

If you are doing a custom build in the near future, I would do a from-nothing build buying everything independently. This way you are able to buy stuff you need anyway, then use it for the custom build. Going to need a 200 litre sump for the custom build? then buy a 200 litre tank

I was thinking of that but figured by the time i get the new tank up and running new tech would be out?

Yes and no. While tech is always changing some things can be "expected" to remain the same. Such as temperature control, the need for return pumps, etc.
Since IPhysically don't have the space at my current place to run a big tank, I'm getting everything large. I brought an oversized heater, way oversized return pump, and the tank itself will become the fuge. These are things I know I still need, but can add to the tank later: the return pump will be for a closed loop, so that can transition with the fish, the fuge can wait until the end as it shouldn't affect the cycle as it will be dry rock mixed with my old live in the fuge. You get the point, stuff that you will see yourself needing in the new build, but that won't affect the new tanks cycle

While you're at it, is there a brand of tank that you all would recommend? I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm thinking that mfr fits with the rest of the thread.
