Aquarium Safe Plastic?

Hey guys,

I have a narrow space for a RO storage area so I can’t fit a brute trash can.

I found this 15g barrel (would be a huge improvement from my 5g bucket)

I was wondering if it was reef safe? Thanks

Polyethylene is generally considered reef safe. Galvanized steel is not safe for salt water, but should be fine for RO. I always try to find items that clearly state “potable water” or “food grade”. I use this barrel personally:

HDPE stamped recycling code 2 is food grade/food safe.

Thanks for the tip, I’ve been browsing potable water tanks to use when I go on vacation but they’re all so pricey, this is a much better option! Hopefully it helps OP as well

Have you looked to see if a Rubbermaid Slim Jim will fit your space? They are 23g and plenty safe.

These are used for hazardous clean up drums. I was given one this size and have used it for salt and fresh water storage without issue, but as noted the ring will rust over time. If it's just sitting upright in the garage (no sloshing around) the ring can basically stay dry since the lid seals in liquids. I've used mine to transport a lot of water and if I had bothered to rinse off salt and dry the ring before I stored it I think it would probably still look new.

The lids are separate I believe or have multiple options. I have the hinged lid and it snaps shut pretty well.
