I'm actually going to side with the manufacturers on this one. It's probably an industry standard to calculate using the outside dimensions.

I don't see anyone complaining about the 2x4's and any other lumber they are using to build a stand. Lumber dimensions are almost NEVER right, I believe a 2x4 is actually 1.75 x 3.75 or somewhere in that ball park.

Sorry brew. my tank is almost the same size with a huge sump. precision marine R48 pro, which I highly recommend. great company, quality prodct and HUGE customer service. Plus i have a 25 gallon rock sump. yet I am only 160 gallons. based on amount of salt mix to start the system. Probably at least 30 to 40 gallon of rock. But im not 180 either. Daang.

I’m setting up my tank this weekend and I plan on filling it with several gallon jugs so that I’ll know exactly (roughly) how much actual water is in my system for this very purpose should I need to dose I’ll know how much water I have. It’s a 75 with a 40b sump, I’ll try to update if I remember.

An industry shouldn't have to change an accepted way of measuring or construction because some people don't know how to read. I'm imagining it came to be this way because the planks were measured every 4in and then cut on the line, with the blade taking 1/8" off on either side.

I filled my 32 gallon tank with exactly 20 gallons of water after all the equipment, sand, and rocks were added. Then, I marked the water level on the glass so top-offs are easy.

I was really close. I have a 40 breeder with a sump and I guessed at 45 gallons with rock sand and sump. It calculated me out at 47 gallons volume with 56 gallons empty.

I also compensate for the water in my sump . I have dosed bicarb and measured my kh before and after . With that i reverse calculated the volume based on the increase in kh . On the safe side i alwats dose 5 gallon less . But ops article is interesting to know the difference of true watervolume vs advertised volume

Either the person filing the suit was a total idiot or they were a greedy lawyer. Lumber sizing standardized across the industry. Of course if you look at really old houses, the 2x4's were actually 2" x 4", but it's probably been 100 years since that was the case.

Does anyone remember the old CRT TVs and monitors? a 13" TV did NOT have a 13" screen!

I just checked my 120. The internal dimensions are 47.25" long x 23.25" deep x 23.5" high for a total volume of 25,816 cubic inches or about 112 gallons. Now, if you take the external dimensions, 120 x 24 x 24, it comes out to exactly 120 gallons. I kind of view it like TV screens or Lumber. Regardless, you need to adjust for how full you have the tank, what you have in it, the volume of your half-full sump, etc, so in the end you can never assume anyway.

That's exactly what it is. A 2x4 starts that way before its milled and planed ..... At which point it's 1 1/2 X 3 1/2 predictably.
