OK - sorry - I assume you're talking about my post. I'm saying Canada and Australia have tended recently to have more restrictive laws on various issues. That is my opinion. I'm not saying its good or bad. And you're absolutely correct - if Winnipeg wants to initiate this law - great. I don't care. I'm just saying - it has the potential to affect 'OUR' hobby. And - Its not just in Winnipeg - its widespread in the US as well - in the animal right's community. So - as I said before - though you seem to think this is an 'impossibility' - I agree with you 'now'. Wait 5-10 years. Remember everyone said the indo ban was 'impossible'. Everyone said the Hawaii ban was impossible. Etc etc. Its funny how things that are 'impossible' keep happening. This is not a political discussion per se - and I didnt mean to imply it was.

Well, not really. It’s more about the fact that what’s reported/discussed in other countries ABOUT other countries (and I am including Canada, where American domestic politics are discussed incessantly and often erroneously) without nuance and context. I am not criticizing you or your comments, which are clear and concise, but instead bemoaning that fact.

Whats helpful on this forum - its nice to quote what you're referring to. I don't recall anyone bringing politics into this. But - if you were referring to me - saying - that certain countries have gone 'nuts'. I was in no way suggesting people shouldn't be vaccinated. What was nuts is that even if vaccinated, we could not travel. Meet friends (though they had been vaccinated), etc. Its all crazy. Its not right or left. Its crazy - unscientific. But - again since I have no clue what you're referring to - I'll stop. PS - I and my entire family have been vaccinated - and I have had the 3rd booster. So - again - what are you exactly referring to?

As far as the Winnipeg law - you're right - its nuts - and most people here have said exactly what you did - it has little chance of passing. But - IMHO - It's coming (i.e. multiple restrictions) - within the decade. There is no point in arguing whether it will or will not at this point.

Actually, I was refering to the post on the first page of the thread seemingly likening a vaccine to poison, so not yours. At least I think that's what was being implied by that post. My post was actually my first on the forum, so sorry about not quoting, I literally wasn't sure how at the time. Either way, it wasn't in reply to your post so no worries!

I think you're right in that certain restrictions are coming. I can very easily see that law being modified to include something like "importing wild-caught marine fish which are also available alternatively as captive-fish is prohibited" which is honestly something I would support entirely given the general issues with habitat loss and also fish loss due to transport, etc.

Frankly until I see a final draft of the law, I refuse to be in any way worried about this, and I actually hope it turns out for the best. Perhaps even just the threat of additional legal actions will incentivise further breeders like biota, etc to expand their facilities. Perhaps better, more stringent sanitation and quarantine at wholesalers will mean we won't need to treat our fish with antibiotics and copper and the associated mortality that comes with that. I think that sort of thing is a matter of when, not if. I'd prefer it if the industry would move to that on their own, but rarely does that happen.

There was already a bill introduced in Hawaii stating that fish would need to be tracked along the whole supply chain - and somehow registered. Additionally, any cruel treatment of any fish was prohibited (seems like common sense, right)?. Among other things that constituted 'cruel treatment' - was holding the 'aquatic life' in less than a gallon of water at any time (meaning that 1 clown fish would have to be shipped in 1 gallon of water). Also - witholding food for more than 24 hours was prohibited.

PS this bill to my knowledge was not passed - it was some time ago - but it just goes to show this Winnipeg issue is not a 'local one'.

IMO the main problem with bans and things is that the people in authority (including voters) often have limited knowledge about what they are doing, and are not affected by what they do. That makes them bad decision makers. When those bills and agendas get pushed there is a strong impetus for them to get passed or enacted because NOT doing so would look "bad". Pushing them through makes it look like "they care", when the exact opposite it true. They don't really care at all because they are not connected to the issue.

It's easy to ban coral collection, it's hard to stop abusing the environment by unrestricted development and poor water management. I was in the Dry Tortugas, and there were scattered and broken pieces of Acropora skeletons everywhere. Maybe banning collection is necessary at this point, but reforming water management is more necessary. You would think that authorities would consider it important for people to know. The cause isn't even widely acknowledged.

When you have such resistance to acknowledging the real problems, much less making necessary changes, you just go and ban mostly harmless stuff, and make innocent people appear like criminals so that you can look good.
