Man I’ll be honest that’s gonna be a difficult one to easily modify which out someone walking you through it in person and you might be better getting a cheap used one at a LFS. My second sump is 25 gallons and it was $25 in the used section. Like you said it pretty much is just one open sump which means as far as return pump and drains the whole sump will go up and down so you have more work to do figuring out the logistics of wverything

Is a good starting point and he has lots of articles about different types of sumps.

Thanks for the link! Good read and a lot of great info!!! It is a wet/dry trickler. And I can buy just a tank from Petco say the 1$ per gallon sale and use that as a sump right? Seems to be a lot easier and more room to work with! What gallon sump would best suit a 75 gallon? Is there a general rule of thumb?

that Sump in your pic almost looks like a wet/dry that someone stripped down.
and when I found it it looked like someone had gotten mad and just yore it down and got out of the hobby, BC the tank and stand was sitting by it too!! Which I took home, cleaned up and sold! Lol it was a tall 65 gallon!

I used a 29 gallon. I’m not sure if there’s a rule or not. I would imagine you’d want as big as you could fit in your cabinet.

Yeah most would agree the bigger the better since the larger your total volume the less the parameters will fluctuate. Dilution is the solution to pollution. It will also be more stable water level wise putting in at least one baffle if you buy a $1 a gallon tank, but you don’t “have” to in order for it to be a sump.
Personally I want the biggest sump with easy access. And enough space for another storage tank for top off. That way you can easily put in an automatic top off in the future when you get bored with doing it by hand.
I had a 190 display with a 100 gallon sump and 30 gallon top off reservoir. When I upgraded to a 350 gallon display I had some spare room so got the second 25 gallon.

Man all those big tanks sure do sound nice!!! That's my dream build, is to have like a 300-400 gallon tank with all the bells and whistles! Well good, about the sump, that's what I was thinking, I want to get it as big as I can to fit under the tank, but only have about a 2 feet by 2 feet doors on the front to squeeze it into lol

You could cut the center brace and reinstall it after you get the sump in.
