Depends on what your going for. Mine doesn't because I like too view and stock all three open sides. Rock work in middle.
 
Some people put a back cover anyway to hide pipes, hobs, etc. On mine algae is on right side but that part of the tank is against the wall like most people's back tank is against the wall so it doesn't matter.
 
I wouldnt worry so much about touching the back but keep a good distance from any sides or front basically any viewing pane.
Here is the scape i did in my 90 DT. Those last shots are a 40b.

Thanks - used zip ties and e marco 400 morter from marco rocks. Lots of time n patience. Lol
Drilled thru 1st layer of overflow to zip tie to.
 
Recently re aquascaped. I recommend not leaning on the back wall, It doesn't look as neat. This scape is super clean lookiong, picture just makes it look like a blue blob
