First I would recommend pre-assembling your aquascape outside of the tank. That way you have some direction when you start the final assembly inside the tank. Then when you assemble it inside, you use cardboard around the tank for the walls. Pre-assembling it outside should keep falling rocks down to minimum as you kinda already know what you want and hopefully keep it from hitting the bottom. Once you have the foundation rocks down you may be able to use some clean rags to help protect the bottom. I hope this helped.
I was not clear in what I was looking for but like your suggestions. I was thinking about what some call egg crate also used as a lid. This is to help protect the glass. My concern is it traping waste destroying water quality.
I used egg crate underneath my last build and ended up regretting it. I decided to remove the sand bed and had to manually cut away the egg crate so it wasn't visible. I personally don't think anything is required under the rock....just make sure everything is secure and you will be fine.
I had never put anything under the rocks and most likely will not for my current build. Just make sure there’s no sharp pointed rocks hitting directly on the glass you should be fine.
