My friend gave me a bunch of live rock that wasn't quite done cycling yet and anyways I have a 55gallon reef tank and my nitrates are about 3-4 ppm. I know this isn't bad enough to kill any fish or anything like that, but it was enough to fuel an algae bloom. I don't want to battle algae trying to grow over my corals. Today I purchased Aquavitro alpha for the problem. It says that it removes chloramites and chloramines and ammonia which I don't need to worry about but the reason I bought it is because it is suppose to detoxify nitrite and nitrate. My local fish store guy told me that by detoxifying nitrite and nitrate it will break down the compounds as in nitrate has 10 molecules and it will remove 2 of the molecules making the nitrate and nitrite unable to feed algae or hurt fish/coral. He said my nitrate test will still show that it's there but it will have been converted to a non toxic non problem fueling form. Is this true? Have any of you had any experience with this? Input based on experience would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks guys

What products like that do is detoxify the nasties until your rock or chemical removal can remove it. I use Prime whenever I get a nitrate spike. Prime does basically the same thing as Alpha. So yea he's telling the truth. So it will not remove it but will make it safe until you can remove it.
