Just picked up a second hand Aqueon 75 gallon Megaflow tank because my 75 gallon had tempered glass. It didn't come with any of the plumbing for the overflow setup so I have to either purchase the kit or do my own thing. This may be a stupid question, but would it be perfectly fine if I just used one of the pipes as a full drain and the second as the return? Pretty much like in the picture I included, without using the valve. The pipe on the left would be above the water line acting as the return from the sump and the pipe on the right would be just below the water line, like 1".

Would that be fine or would a herbie overflow setup be better to do and then running the return over the top of the tank?

I'm not worried about any noise it will make by the way.

Running one as a drain without any kind of valve is going to be extremely noisy as it sucks in air into the system. Best bet would be to do as you stated above, run it herbie style with one as the main drain with a gate valve and the other as your emergency backup with your return over the top. Or run a single drain as a durso and the other line as a return.

I would do it like this only real problem is with 3/4 pipe u might not get the flow you would want but for me it does what it should

I'll just do a stockman standpipe setup for the drain. Now my question is, do I need a gate valve to control flow on the drain or will it be okay to just leave it completely open? The drain will sit just below water level so I shouldn't have any issue of overflowing or anything like that. The drain is 1-1/4" piping and the return will be 1" piping.
