I will soon be running an aqueon 55 with a 20gal sump and about 700 gpm so a little over the 10x turn over rate.. I have no idea what flow to go with, some of the maxspect gyre pumps will fit but their is a lot of bad reviews, then I found some ac controllable pumps in a brs video and they are very affordable and seem perfect? But I have no decent ecpirence with any pump other than syncra (I have 4 syncra pumps right now lol) and I also have no idea what would be good for coral movement being save yet appealing for everything in the tank

My preferences is to have adjustable powerheads, or powerheads that I can at least set on random mode to get varied flow.

As for how much you need, that's difficult to quantify. If you're going for SPS, generally you want higher flow. Corals can handle a lot of flow so long as it's not directly on them and tearing their tissue. I personally have a 1,500 gph Vortech MP10 and a 1,000 gph Jebao PP-4 in my tank. They run on random mode at 100%, so at times my 20 gallon is getting over 2,500 gph of flow. This flow is random though, and it's not concentrated on any of the corals.

Having said that Sicce makes fine pumps. There's nothing wrong with using constant flow pumps so long as you don't blast any of the corals with flow. Adjustable pumps just give you more options.

Thanks a lot for the advice, I am definitely getting pumps with adjustable speed... I would like to have controllers with them I guess I was scared if 1,000 gph would be to much for a 55

No 1000gph is fine as long as it's not directed right at a coral .it could peal the skin off then . My 200g has over 20,000gph and I could even go with more. In the ocean water moves several feet persecond past corals in our tanks we can't even get close to that most of the time it's just a few inches per second

Flow is also very important so that the statict water at the very surface of the corals is as thin as possible which helps it pick up food and nutrition
