Are DC pumps worth the extra $

A DC pump costs $50 dollars more than a similarly rated AC pump. But you can turn it down. Now it costs $100 more than a pump that would do what you want.
Hmmmm.

While the skimmer I'm looking at has a small DC pump -- I don't think saving $ will be the deciding factor for me.
Actually, from what I've learned -- the DC pump will provide me with additional control for "dialing in" the skimmer performance. With pump control and air control it should make finding the "sweet spot" much easier.

I have the doc skimmer 9012 DC got it in September of this year, have had a few hobs remora, aqua max and an original hydor. The tunze is very quite, and easy to dial in with the controller. I can’t hear it running like I could all the other ones I have had. I was hesitant buying the DC version but very glad I did. You see some people saying it throws bubbles from the base of the collection cup but you just have to seat it correctly. I’m satisfied with there DC version of there skimmer

Hey drewtx1 -- thanks for that reply. That helps reassure me that getting the 9004 DC model will be the right move.

I own the a/c 9004, it's dead easy to tune using just the water level and air restrictor.

I think if you reduced the amount of water going through this skimmer by any significant amount, you will lose the waterfall effect which gives you surface skimming.

Also regarding noise, the sound of the a/c motor cannot really be heard over the fizzing sound of the foam (which is also very quiet).

Thanks for sharing your experience.
I've been talking with Steve at InTank aquatics who in turn has been talking with the folks at Tunze.
Apparently Tunze is offering the DC version to more easily meet the needs of the international market they serve.
Looks as though either will work for my needs. Thus the AC model will save me money and perhaps last longer.
