I’m sure this has been asked before. Are various dinoflagellate species always in the tank and bloom when something gets out of whack or are they are a problem when they are newly introduced into a tank and conditions are right for their growth?
 
Yes. Dinos are organisms present in any reef setting, in fact they are necessary for smooth operation. One famous dino source is zooxanthella, which is symbiotically present in most corals.
