are firefish/dart fish hermaphrodite if not what are they exactly. How do you go about getting a pair? I recently bought a pair of these firefish and they lived fine for 2 weeks until the other tore the other apart and killed it.

so are they born either male or female as normal and do they change sex at allThey are not, and they are very difficult to sex. Sometimes, the genital papilla can be observed on the females. Not always.
There is a good thread about this on the forum from about a year ago or so:
Thread 'Sexing and Pairing Dart & Firefish' https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/sexing-and-pairing-dart-firefish.814107/
It is not known definitively, but it is believed that they are born with a determined sex and do not change (gonochorism).so are they born either male or female as normal and do they change sex at all
but you got any link from a siteor source not just a thread that actually states they are not as I'm finding it difficult to find one. They are not, and they are very difficult to sex. Sometimes, the genital papilla can be observed on the females. Not always.

my 2 where fine then 1 day the other one turned and killed the other quite savageAnother thread says they that most gobies are hermaphrodites and born female, so I am a little confused.
In the past I had 3 fire fish, 2 paired and the last one stayed by itself and died first.
Currently I have a pair of firefish and a pair of scissortail. They never fought and each pair sleep together in their corner. It seem that in each pair, one became slightly bigger than the other. Was I lucky and got one of each? I never saw them fighting.
Hrmm... very first link on a google search:but you got any link from a siteor source not just a thread that actually states they are not as I'm finding it difficult to find one.
That is because they are not technically gobies.Another thread says they that most gobies are hermaphrodites and born female, so I am a little confused.

so basically we don't know what they are still then which is weird.Hrmm... very first link on a google search:
"No data exists on the sexuality of the dartfishes (e.g., are they gonochorists or hermaphrodites?) and little information is available on their reproductive behavior and mating systems. However, many species apparently form long-term pair-bonds. Dartfishes lay demersal eggs in the burrows in which they refuge, and upon hatching the larvae enter the plankton to drift and develop without further parental attention. The juveniles settle-out of the plankton at about 2.5 cm (1 in.), at which time, many species will immediately form schools for protection"
