Are leather coral toxic?

Hi ,

I have sps , lps , soft , nps mixed tank. And I've just heard that leather corals are toxic. I have zealit in my system . What would you suggest ?

Yes indeed Sarcophyton produce and release toxins such as terpenoids. These compound will stunt the growth of near by corals and adversely affect other more sensitive corals. Running carbon/high quality and routine water changes can reduce the untoward affect of those toxins significantly.
 
Yes they certainly do. I've lost many a fish and corals due to their toxins which are more prone to be released when the coral is stressed.

Is this also true for Gorgonias?
 
I had a giant nepthea in with my sps , I ran carbon every other month never really had a problem. however since then I sold all my leathers and have just gone just sps. Too early to tell if my growth has increased or not/
 
Wow I have a ton of leather in my sump that I t hr ough down there cause I felt bad and didn't want to throw it out. I hate to think it could explain some of the issues I've faced. Might be worth the peace of mind to just get rid of them
