Infinitely more is the case with all types of plastics, forming islands in many places in the oceans, killing lots of marine life. The same life we try to keep in our systems. Same plastic pollution is killing people, like you and me.
This "green talk" is a political movement.
Governments are worried about money and to look good, for more money.

And China is no longer taking plastic for reuse, so it's ending up everywhere. Some states are no longer allowing plastic bags. It's a small start, but a start nonetheless.

And that's why eliminating sources of mercury is also important. Going after the low hanging fruit is a good start. As I've said, try to find screw-base incandescent and fluorescent bulbs in HD and Lowes. Even 48" fluorescents are being replaced by LED substitutes. Mercury-containing bulbs are nearly gone for residential lighting. The natural progression, however long it takes, is that the rest of the bulbs are likely to follow.
