In my quest for ensuring my tank is sustainably sourced I was curious where LFS get their Mexican Turbo Snails. Are they maricultured or are they wild?

The only info I’ve been able to find is they are taken from the Mexican ocean. Does anyone know?

I have never heard of them reproducing in captivity. They are usually taken from the wild. They're also a poor candidate for our tanks because they are a temperate water species. Our tanks are too warm for them, and it dramatically shortens their lifespan.

Try astraea or trochus snails. They reproduce in captivity and are much better candidates for our tanks.

I’ve also never heard of captive bred Turbo Snails. But I wondered if maybe they were maricultured.
I have 5 large ones in my 40G. I’ve had them for years. I don’t plan on anymore but if I did I’d get trochus.

I don’t think the mariculturing concept applies to inverts like snails, that being said, I don’t believe anyone aquacultures snails. May be something to look into as prices for everything, including snails rises. I recently bought lot for a few tanks, and paid 4x what they were going for a couple of years ago.

I actually had little baby snails in an old 10 gallon FOWLR. They were tiny so I wasn’t sure what type, but I swear they looked like tiny little turbo snails. I had to tear down that tank so I didn’t see them grow to full size. It was neat though.

I’m not sure if captive bred snails would work or not. I feel like if it was viable it would already be done.

I believe algaebarn only sells captive bred snails if i remember right. It is more pricey than the lfs(at least mine), but if that is a concern see what they have. Dont think you will find turbos though

It is being done for several popular reef snails. I imaging just like with fish we will see an increasing amount of varieties captive bred as time goes on.
