The larger one will typically be the female. They can get pretty aggressive when establishing roles. You'll know when they have settled it when one starts this spastic convulsions when the other charges it. That's how they show submission.

Well one fish had been showing submission already from what I thought. He would do the submissive twitches and spasms or whatever. But now I think the other fish is doing the submissive twitches but we will see. I think they are going to get it figured out.

I've had my lightning maroon clowns for almost 2 years now and the female still nips at the male who is about 1/3 her size at this point. Females can be so mean. lol

The smaller one is definetly the aggressor at this point. The larger one has been doing the submissive shakes some more. As long as the bigger one decides to remain submissive I think we will be good. That's a big IF though. At this point I guess it's 50/50.

Just an update. I think my decesion to give them a little while longer is the right decesion at this point. Hopefully I won't regret it later.

The slightly larger one is doing the submissive shakes a lot more. Any time the slightly smaller one goes near it starts shaking. This is a role reversal from what we saw in the beginning. The smaller one was pretty fiesty initially, so much so that my fiancee commented on it and when I explained to her that the dominant one turns female she put her money on the smaller one being the female.

I thought it was settled when the smaller one started doing the submissive shakes, but like I said the roles have now reversed. No more damage to either fish and I feel like their wounds are getting better already even though it hasn't been that long. At this point it can go either way, wish me luck!

So I haven't seen any more aggression from the clowns. I'm working from home this week and noticed that they seem to totally ignore each other for the most part.

What gives? Starting to wonder if these darn fish are ever going to finish pairing up. Or if they both decided to be female? Not that there is anything wrong with that!

This is how they spend most of their day. On opposite sides of the overflow.



When they do get close to each other they don't seem to pay the other any attention.



This is how they sleep since I took out the fake nem.

One is at the back hosting the powerhead and the other is hosting the sand. Sorry far away pic, was trying to let them sleep this morning.






I guess as long as they aren't killing each other? Right?

I’m having the same issue with my clowns.
I bought them as a pair and the male will just chase the hell out of the female and she’s always hiding.

Usually the female is the larger one and the more aggressive. Are you saying the smaller one is chasing the bigger one?

Glad somebody likes my humor! The originally suspected male is still being the dominant one. I've caught the originally suspected male doing the submissive shake here and there but they are still sleeping separately on opposite sides of the overflow. I still think it's too early to tell. All seems to be peaceful now but I still think it's a 50/50 change here. I'm going to continue observing and continue hoping for the best.

They may never sleep in the same place. My pair of black ice clowns sleep in different anemones. The female allows him to come over all day, but at lights out she kicks him out of bed to his own.
