Are nylon barbs OK to use when plumbing?

BRS sells PVC, and ABS barbs. Industrial suppliers often sell glass-reinforced polypropylene. Some chemistry supply sites sell nylon. Nylon is by far the cheapest solution. I'm wondering if there's a reason for this. Should I avoid this stuff, or will it work?

I know people use nylon rods to create rock structures, so chemically you're fine. And I have no reason to believe that they wouldn't hold up structurally. We really don't run high pressures in our tanks so anywhere a barb is acceptable I can't think of a reason nylon wouldn't work. It may be a little softer than polypropylene so maybe you can't crank it down as hard? Maybe someone else has direct knowledge though.

I'm actually concerned about the threaded portion holding a seal than the actual barb itself.

I should have clarified, but I'm guessing the answer will still be that they're OK.

I use a bit of silicone on the thread side. I hand tighten and then use two channel locks to make it a bit tighter. The threads are tapered on each side so don’t go crazy tightening. Once tight enough the taper should make it water-tight. Some people use Teflon tape but I prefer a little silicone.

It can easily be undone, cleaned and reused down the line should you need to.
