I purchased two "maroon clownfish", both from different shops, but I just wanted to confirm they are exactly what the shop's told me.

The smaller guy was purchased as a aqua cultured maroon clown, and the bigger female was just sold to me as a standard Maroon (mis bar). I've been looking at pictures of standard maroon clownfish and my larger female appears too light colored and my smaller male has alot of black on his fins. Both fish have clear tips to their fins. I am still a noob when it comes to clownfish and just wanted to confirm that these are both maroons or possibly hybrid?

Thanks for any help provided! I have posted some pic's below

Maroon clowns have a taller and shorter body than the "Nemo" clowns. It is difficult to tell in your photos because they are not good full body side shots. But the little guy looks like it to me, and the larger misbar it almost looks too long and slender to be a maroon. Try for another photo and maybe someone else will chime in here. good luck.

Thanks I figured as much. When we were on our way home with the bigger one I thought to myself "this one does not look like a maroon too light colored for this size".

I will try to grab some better side shots of both

Here are some good side shots.

They have paired up already, so this should not be an issue in the future with them being different types?

Any possibility the bigger one is a "Blood Orange" clown?

Those are hybrids between ocellaris, IIRC, and maroons.

Since a hybrid between the two already exists, yours might pair compatibly ... or there might be trouble, if the larger / female turns out to be an older specimen of a smaller species.

They look like maroon clowns, but each has a slightly different look about them. That is the thing about these hybrids. These guys look cool. I hope they pair up for you. do you have an anemone for them?

No I currently have them in CP in QT while my main tank upstairs is running without any fish. Just live rock and CuC w/ a cleaner shrimp. The tank is still fairly new and just set up in Aug, but we have started to get coralline algae and a healthy copepod population. Would it be a good idea to introduce a bubble tip prior to reintroducing the clowns once treatment is complete (they were exposed to a dwarf angel that had velvet)

It appears they have paired. I got the female 1 week after the male and she bullied him for a couple days, but they sleep together now at this point. He did take some damage to his fins, but it healed up quick.

Thanks Bruce! Guess I will see how it plays out over time

I am happy to see you are using a QT process. It is too soon for an anemone. It takes a mature tank with stable water parameters to support an anemone. Some folks say a year. Sometimes 6 months. Have you researched what anemones need to thrive? Have you read up on maroon clowns? I ask because maroons can be real aggressive to fish added to a tank after they have been in the tank even a short while. They can even kill fish added later. They are one of the fish you place in the tank last.

Yes I have done lots of research and am aware of the mature tank rule when it comes to anemones and do not plan to rush anything. My main tank will be fish less until January to be safe in case any ich was present. Unfortunately I purchased the first clown prior to researching maroons, but have since educated myself to their behaviors which my large female does not display. She is not very aggressive at all and does not even chase my hand when working in the tank.

This was also another reason why I created the post asking if they are 100% maroon because there is little aggression with pairing and someone pointed out in another forum that they might be hybrid. I already feel attached to them and will make it work somehow. They are with 3 chromis and have never nipped them

I thought you sounded like a researching kind guy. Glad to see new hobbyst who read! New tanks are Such a fun time!
About that calm sweet maroon you have...lol...that will change. They are buggars. Awesome but buggars!

The big one in the side shot looks like a maroon variant to me. Which, I can not tell you. But it’s a maroon.
