So I thought these fruit packages would be a good powerhead protectors, but I'm wondering if the material (styrofoam) will degrade or be an issue in the tank? Thoughts?

Pure "styrofoam" is polystyrene, which will not biodegrade in any reasonable time.

If exposed to bright light, especially UV, it can break down to powdery bits over time.

That said, i do not know if they put other ingredients into it.

It sure is handy to have a proper chemist informing discussions like this!
