Like Dusty said don't pop the bubbles if at all possible. If you can take whatever it's growing on out of your tank easily do so. Remove what you see by hand then go into over kill mode (only with what you are able to take OUT of the tank) and scrub the area where it was growing with a toothbrush and rinse with tank water to knock off anything that may be left behind that could spread and cause a outbreak--then return the rock to your tank. Only do this if it's growing on something easy to remove if not just pluck what you can and trash it the above really is overkill. Emerald crabs will eat the stuff so I've heard but manually removeing it is the best way to stop it before it gets out of control. Either way get a few emerald crabs (they go for $3-$6 retail) they're a cool addition to any reef as they help with other algae as well as bubble algae--also keep up with water changes.

Not one person asks about his water parameters? Just " go get an emerald crab"? Interesting.... Also for the people who say NOT to pop the bubbles can you explain how an emerald crab fits a bubble half his size into his mouth WITHOUT popping it??

I cant tell if you over doing sarcasm or really curious? I have wondered about the emerald crab popping then while eating them as well, I just assumed it consumed the baby ones when they popped up.

A bit of both lol... I always read not to pop, but let's be honest there's no way a crab eats it whole.

Bubble algae will or can take over your tank. If it gets really bad it can deprive the fish of oxygen. it can be caused by many things. My best advise is when you see it pop up just remove it.
How would algae deplete O2??

Bubble algae sucks . . .

I got a couple emerald crabs and have not see marked improvements. Plus when the algae gets onto high-up rocks or corals I dont see any way for the crabs to do their thing. i also was wondering about them popping the algae when they start to munch.

Seems to me the only real solution is an ongoing and concerted effort to remove it as you see it. Pull out any rock work that has more than two or three and pull, scrape or otherwise get it off then clean the rock really well.

I do have a question: if I take "live" rock out and get the algae off as best as possible then actually let it dry out for a week or two to pretty much kill all the algae (I am having a similar problem with palythoa Zoas), will the rock still be "live"?

At that point there would be no life in or on the rocks, therefore the rocks will not be "live".
