I'm not too sure if these are purple hornets, someone said they were purple stingers. They're small polyps so I'm not sure if they are purple hornets that they'll have a thicker skirt. LMK what you all think, thanks.

i am no expert, but i would venture to say that they are not purple hornets, but something more like alien eyes.

or AOIs, or blue steels, really hard to tell apart, not purple hornet...

Not purples. Looks like an AOI a little bit.

I agree with Butts182 I too am not an expert but they sort of resemble purple hornets but don't look like the actual purple hornets that I've seen on Hung's website on BayCorals.

I have a question..... If they are not, then they are not the above either. These have an alternating skirt. So what are these? I would say purple hornets. And the longer skirts is nothing unusual. Happens. The purples you see mostly have short stubby skirts, but I would still say that these are. My 2 cents

from the looks of them they dont even resemble purple hornets . the yellow ring is not defined enough. true purples have a very clean yellow circle not blurry at all

The definition of the ring and the thickness of the skirt does not mean a coral is not a match. The color characteristics says differently i think. I have a few red hornets that have a different shaped ring then others and they are straight from bay corals. I just think that upon a further look one might believe the differences we are seeing is because of maybe poor conditions, a wild colony, or something we have not seen before, but resembles that of a purple hornet. My last 2 cents. Take care

he did not ask if they resemble a purple hornet he asked if they were purple hornets. i never seen one with a non defined yellow circle. that is usually a dead give away

I do think what DrTerro is saying is valid.
But with the name, there's price tag followed to it.
Whice brings us to this.
Will you drop $20pp( am I right?? ) for the picture posted by Nino and hornets Troylee posted?

Hornets or not, if you like it, its going to look great in your tank.

I have the same frag, would love to know exactly what it is bc it was sold to me as PH's.

After carful analization of pictures of the "purple hornets" in question versus pics of true PH"s, Blue steel, blue hornets, Alien eyes, AOI's, including black hornets all from coralpedia.com and my own collection; i feel the spacing between the mouth and inner ring plays a important roll in this debate. The elongated skirt also makes me think toward the possibility that it is a morph of a wild hitchhiker that just so happens to show these trait characteristics of a purple hornet. actually very similar to mermaid palys.
Even under drastic water quality i have never gotten PH"s to look like these, the look like a Proto-paly of some sort.

pretty cool though ++1
