Are two surge protectors better than one?

I'm planning a 40g build and am thinking about having a second surge protector with an off switch that I use for the return pump/skimmer/circulating fans. This way, I could turn all of them off at once for water changes, feeding, etc., while leaving all the other equipment on. Is there any down side to doing it this way?
 
You can buy gfci powerstrips but I would recommend putting a gfci outlet on the wall always better safe than sorry there are inexpensive and easy to install.
I have two available outlets and I'm installing gfci on both. They aren't expensive. The main cost will be having someone put them in, because I don't do electricity.
 
That is fine just try not to plug a power strip into another power strip that can cause a fire
Oh I would never do that. But I'm sure someone did and that's why we have a warning! Lol
 
I have done that thats who I know its not a good idea lol. The DJ strips are an excellent choice and one I am going with on my next tank build (starting this weekend lol).

Only problem with two surge protectors is if you are using a GFCI outlet it will not trigger it running both as it is a redundant system. I ran into this problem when I went on vacation and had a water incident. Because I was using two surge protectors when my overflow box broke off and the water came up and over the top of my tank and landed all over my hardware it only tripped the surge protectors instead of shutting off my GFCI outlet. That outlet had one of my apex power bars plugged into it and had my main sump pump plugged into it. So when my apex module got brought down from the water it left that pump running. Because of the redundant surge protectors it didn't trigger my GFCI outlet that would have shut off all the power on that line. So instead of tripping the GFCI outlet the sump pump kept running dumping over 100 gallons of water on the floor and all over my hardware as it splashed off the wall behind the tank. When my Apex module got shorted out my apex power bars attached to the GFCI outlet reverted to normal power bars and they kept running instead of being shut down. If I didn't have the 2 surge protectors this would have tripped it cutting the power. So in the end it ended up causing more damage then it would have if it would have tripped. I took the second surge protectors off needless to say after that and will not run two. I learned from that experience that is for sure. Just some food for thought.

Did you run one plugged into another?
 
Yes I ran one plugged into the other with the first one plugged into the GFCI outlet. Both got tripped but the GFCI didn't. :(
 
Sounds like you have or had a different issue. Water wont necessarily cause a current surge but the gfci should have sensed a short between the power and ground.
 
What happened was the first power bar that was not plugged that I plugged into the other power bar got water dumped onto it and it shut off both power bars off but not the outlet itself. So if it had been plugged directly into the wall the gfci outlet would have tripped. I tested this by plugging in the wet power bar into another power bar that was plugged into the gfci and flicked the power switch on. Both power bars tripped but not the gfci. I then plugged the wet power bar directly into the gfci outlet and it tripped immediately. It is clear in this case my situation would not have been as bad if I had directly plugged it into the wall and not used two. I would have though the gfci would have sensed this but it didn't. I even replaced the outlet thinking it was bad, but the new one did the same. I had my electrician buddy with me at the time and he agreed if I didn't have the two plugged in I would have been fine. The redundant system stops the gfci from sensing the surge. I didn't know this till this accident happened and i myself will not run it that way again. Lesson learned.

If I plug them into two different gfci outlets, would that add an extra layer of protection?
 
I bet it would. I just had the problem when two power bars were plugged daisy chained together not when they were each plugged into the gfci outlets. Even if you used the same gfci outlet for both power bar and plugged them into it you would be fine.
