Hey guys! In my dorm room I live with another guy who is sort of a hippie. He really doesn’t like chemicals and things like that. I want to get a UV sterilizer and he thinks they’re dangerous. Does keeping a UV sterilizer in my tank in my room pose a threat to me in the long run?

No, as long as there's no cracks in the housing it's perfectly safe. Just make sure to get a quality one as the lower end ones I've found have issues with their bulb housings and end up with water near the socket, causing all sorts of voltage issues.

Most hippies I knew loved chemicals...of course that was the seventies and well...different time. It's safe as anything else. If your dorm is made of stone you could mention the radon gas you're likely being exposed to, if wood then the arsenic used as a preservative will do....life is dangerous, we'll all most assuredly die from it.

I could be projecting a bit...didn't get along at all with my freshman college roommate.

Good luck!

Unless the UV sterilizer has an open bulb to the room it will not effect the room. Even if the UV was open to the room I doubt it would do as much as walking outside on a sunny day. It is light. It travels at the speed of light and does not persist or accumulate in the environment. If you stare or exposure yourself to the bare light for lengthy periods of time daily it can cause skin damage which you will likely not see for upwards of 20 years. If the strength is high enough to penetrate your skin it can cause DNA damage that your body has to repair and can sometimes be done with errors. Run the sterilizer as it is designed and you have an almost infinite list of more pressing health concerns in college. If you bought one that can 'sun' burn you, congratulations, that is on bad **** sterilizer.

Unless you pull the bulb out of the housing and plug it in and just stare at the light for hours, you’re not gonna have any issues while it’s in the housing. I wouldn’t run a tank without one ever again.
