Are Vectra’s reliable?

I’m about to order my return pump. I’m deciding between a Cor15 and a Vectra M1. I like the Vectra because I can hook it to the battery backup. I’ve heard great things about the Neptune pumps especially once paired to the Apex (which I’m planning on buying)

I’ve seen a lot of Vectras ending up in the classifieds section and I’ve seen a few posts about the Vectras dying out.

Does anyone know if Neptune is planning on a battery backup option and does anyone know if Ecotech is planning on revamping their current pumps?
 
I can speak from my own experience. I am running dual Vectra S1's. 3 months in and no issues. Happy with them so far.

I have not used or owned either pumps, but from what's posted on the Neptune forum, you are able to have backup battery support for the Cor 15.

I can only speak on my experience. I am running dual Vectra S1's. They have been running about 3 months. No issues so far very happy. Great build quality.
 
You have a few questions and I can answer the main one first off. I have the S-1 which was 275$. At least 100$ more for the name. I was frustrated because for the xtra money and the name brand, you think it would have come with an inflow guard to prevent rocks, snails and whatever else. It’s an extra wad of cash for that as if it weren’t expensive already. If you do get a Vectra, make sure you get the guard and I’ll tell you why. I have a nice big refugium that I usually keep a pair of clowns in for xtra space. A week after gettin the pump, I had two frostbite platinum clownfish pair I had just bought, and the female was gravid. I was so excited at the prospect. Well, I placed them in my refugium, not rembering about the open inflow, and both clownfish were blended into several pieces. I think I actually cried loudly[emoji31]. I got ahold of Bulk Reef Supply who kindly did a three way call to Ecotech. The best the could do for me was a free inflow guard and an apology. I’ll bet the guards come with the pups now. It cost them probably a 1$ at the most to make these and I don’t get why it wasn’t in the first. place.
Here’s my other problem that I had huge problem with. Buying a products from Ecotech always meant that you’d have complete compatibility with Neptune products such as their light modules. Well, this is a thing if the past. We as consumers are forced to buy extra this or that for each product to have full functionality. The whole reason for these problems is because Neptune and Ecotech are at odds and competition is ensuring over each of their new competing DC return pumps, both at a cost that is unattainable for most. I truly have buyers remorse because what I have spent on my Vectra, I could’ve gotten more gph and other features that actually work with my Neptune controller, which is giving me problems for the second time again and will have to send in again. I’m going to make my own Reef-Pi controller, with all the features I specifically want. Check out those posts. Very cool and free. Uses Raspberry Pi based shareware Reef Pi. Guy named Raj is lead on the project. You shud take a look. It will blow Neptune out of the way. Raspberry Pi is a fully functional 32$ computer.

LOL what does the controller have to do with either pumps?
 
Oh yeah, it also has an AWESOME 8 or 5 MP camera that has awesome clarity and no lag time when streaming. You can even stream to you Apex Fusion dashboard very easily.

At least state the battery backup capabilities of your controller; that would be at least somewhat applicable to the thread lol

Sorry, I was ranting on how these two companies have made it easier for you to control their products. Compatibility, you know what I mean? I bought my Vectras thinking I would get more compatibility between Neptune and Ecotech, like it’s always been. It was a legal fallout that they had because they both came out with competing pumps. The only one that suffers is the consumer.
That’s all my point was.
Then I mentioned making a controller that’s better. That’s all...I didn’t mean to upset anyone.
It’s a good pump. I haven’t had any problems other than what I mentioned, which I wouldn’t have bought it if I had known. Plus like I said in prev post, it’s about 100$ more than what you’d pay for a different brand with better features.

Not at all haha. Your absolutely right, there are for sure other methods and avenues that most in this hobby could use as alternatives for 95% of the name branded stuff sold especially in the controller, pump and powerhead areas.

What do you mean battery backup for the controller? It runs on AC or DC and the battery back up is only 4 AA Batteries.

I was just joking around, I thought maybe the Pi controller had a battery backup program for the pumps you were running off it.

I’m just trying to get everyone to at least take a look at the Reef Pi forum. There’s absolutely no compatibility issues there.

Well the. Reef Pi controller isn’t my idea. It’s a Reef2Reef forum. I just have a Raspberry Pi3 I bought for 30$. It is an aquarium controller that has way more functionality than Neptune’s Apex. Sorry didn’t mean to hi jack the thread, but I’m tired of blowing good money on stuff that you can make yourself. I breed marine ornamentals (fish,shrimp) so I HAVE To depend on my equipment and for it to all work as automatically as possible. That’s my gripe on the Ecotech and Neptune letting down their customer base.

Well this is off topic like your post, but cmon. I couldn’t laugh hard enough at this. “Way more functionality” than apex. You have your budget DIY controller but let’s not pretend that it has more functionality than an apex system. It’s comparing your wheelbarrow with a go cart motor attached to a fine vehicle.

That is unless your personal reef pi has all of this in a neat, user friendly package

I’m not bashing your reef-pi, just suggesting that you be realistic here.
 
I appreciate the insight and opinions! I tried searching but couldn’t find anything on Cor pumps or Neptune having any sort of battery backup unless it’s a DIY thing.

I want the Cor15 over the Vectra but I want the peace of mind knowing there is a backup in case of power failure which has happened enough times for me to stress it. This is tough!
 
Vectras don't have a very good track record in regard to reliability but apparently an issue was addressed recently that is supposed to help. I've not used one but I've seen a number of posts regarding problems.
