FWIW, skimmers should be pretty good at removing microplastics.

Microplastics are certainly a concern. The reef systems we set up should live decades if not longer providing we keep them healthy. A search on google scholar with the term "Microplastics Marine Biofilms" produces research with worrisome findings. Like this paper for example that finds they harbor pathogens and may be a threat to mariculture.
