Are you running Triton? What has been your experience?

I’ve been debating switching over to Triton. I’ve redone my plumbing and increased my fuge size. I keep looking online for people’s experiences and reviews. I’m looking forward to the BRS 160 experiment to see how that progresses.

If you’re running Triton what has your experience been?

How long have you been running it?

Did you have algae issues when switching over?

I started Triton on my 250 Red Sea Reefer (total system volume 65g) back on September 1st when I upgraded my 24g cube.

I have a Current eFlux 1050 gph return pump and 2 660 gph wave pumps (at 80% surge mode)
2 AI Hydra 26's running the AB+ mimic setting
Kessil A80 Tuna Flora for my fuge
Skimz Mini Monzter 123 skimmer
I was using an Avast Marine Spyglass reactor, but it just took up too much space and I replaced it today with a BRS mini for my AL 99
I run BRS Rox carbon in a bag in my sump.

I had been using the Red Sea Reef Care program and doing 15% H2O changes each week.
I sent my first ICP test back on 9/9 and found that my Zinc & Tin were elevated and Ca & Mg were low. I realized while waiting on the ICP test that I had not been doing my Hanna checker Ca quite right.

I have never had any hair algae issues, even with my previous tank. The only annoying thing is that I feel I need to clean my glass more than I should.

I didn't do any water changes until I got back the ICP test and was directed to do 15% changes for 6 weeks, to reduce Zinc & Tin. I used Tropic Marin salt to do those. I will confess that I did only 10% for most of the weeks, and did miss a week when I went to RAP.
I have an undersized Fuge that I built in my sump and a rock with a large cluster of Pulsing Zenia that is growing like the weed it is, but is doing great for nutrient export. I have had to thin chaeto once since starting with a cup or so.
I have never had algae issues other than having to clean my glass every other day or so. I removed GFO a few weeks ago because my Phosphates (using the ULR Phosphorus Hanna Checker) were 0.006 and nitrates undetectable with Red Sea pro kit. No change in levels last weekend. This past Friday I added a few new fish (2 little ones and a 3" melanurus wrasse) and started to feed a bit heavier still. Today, NO3 was 1.5 and PO4 was 0.58. A bit higher than I was aiming for with Po4 so I just added AL99 to run for 8 hours each night. Nitrates I will see how they progress in another week or so. I did a full round of testing this morning and at the same time collected my next ICP sample to send. I wish I had done that the first time so I could have compared my own testing accuracy with the ICP tests.

All in all I am happy with Triton. I use filter socks on and off just to polish and I do feed my corals, I use Reefroids, a few times a week and AcroPower, once a week.

I feel that its a simple system to follow and maintain. I love the no routine water changes; it allows me to enjoy the tank so much more. I enjoy the chemistry and probably do more often that I need to for things other than Alk, which I do every 2 days right now as I get fully stabilized.

Your tank looks great and thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for. There are some reviews online and some forum posts but not a lot of in depth accounting of someone’s experience and feelings about the system.

I too have been looking at the “other methods” as pushing 1,000 GPH through a ten gallon fuge will be a little louder than I’d like. I’m not sure my algaes would be too happy about it either.

Interesting that you’re using pulsing Xenia for export. I had some a long time ago and loved it for the visible Alk readings it gives. My son loves it but I had a time getting rid of it before. In the fuge though... that might work.

It was really done by accident. I had this rock in a pico at work that I had to break down. I decided to just put it in the back of the tank, I did some reading about the Xenia and decided to remove most of the other corals I had on the rock, and let it go. On the rock I am hoping to keep it off my main structures. My Sunburst hangs out back there too.

I guess this is more hype / marketing than anything else. I was under the impression that lots of people were trying the Triton method. It’s certainly interesting.

There is a very active Triton Facebook page and there is a Triton section here in the forums. You might get more input there. I don't think it's hype and marketing, there are a lot of people on those other areas.

I've been running Triton for a year. I love it! I set my system up for it from the beginning. Large high flow, high light refugium, big skimmer, only three baffles in the sump. It's so simple but makes so much sense. I don't even need GFO, my phosphate always comes back low on my tests.

I test every 3 months. In addition to the Triton chemicals, I dose Red Sea Coral Colors A (iodine and bromine) as per my testing results. 1ml per day keeps I and Br where they should be. And I dose Acropower on my dosing pump (4ml every other day). My latest test showed I should start dosing potassium as well. I corrected my level, and will start dosing 1ml every other day until my next IPC test. Having an eight-head dosing pump is the best!

The Core 7 chemicals are very concentrated! Need to dose into a high flow area, or perhaps water them down with RODI. Also, I had to switch to clear dosing containers cause I ran out of chemical once without realizing it.

I hate filter socks and love plankton, so this system is perfect for me! I get great polyp extension on all SPS. I do a few water changes, mostly because I use the water out of my SPS system for my nano and softy cube. Daily alkalinity testing is a must, weekly calcium.

I've tried algae scrubbers, large frequent water changes, carbon dosing, all of it over the years. Triton is hands down the best method I've found. My fish are fat, corals thriving, love it.

Some pics from yesterday. Spent all day replacing my old frag racks and making more room for new corals! The chaeto in my sump tumbles. It's mesmerizing, ha. Also, I credit the auto neck cleaner on the skimmer for a lot of my success. Highly recommend if you have the room. My system is two 4x2x1 tanks, one above the other. SPS up top, LPS below. 10x turnover.

I ran it for about a year. Sent sample to the lab 2 different times and other than Iodine being a little low, everything fell well within expected norms. However, did not feel that my sps's were growing at the rate I wanted. Switched over to Aquaforest and had similar results except constantly battled algae outbreaks. after a few months I switched to Red Sea on the advice of my local LFS. Sps growth accelerated and algae issues ceased. While I

I’d rather keep it out of the Triton forum. If only people currently using Triton see it, it’d be 100% “I use it and love it”. While that feedback is usefull and I’d love to hear it, id also like to hear from people that may have stopped using it.
