Ashrs new 36x30x20 Sps build!

Hey all

New on Reef 2 Reef so nice to meet all of you.

I am starting a new build thread as I have recently lost my old RSM250 SPS dominate tank during a move. It was a very sad day as I lost 98% of all my fish and SPS corals, even a large 7" clam.

Now it is time to rebuild, bigger and better!

Here is a picture of my old tank to give you an idea of what I had:

Now for my new tank!

I have decided to go with a 36x30x20 cube tank. I was going to go 36x36x20 but felt it was a little bigger then I needed in my home. This also includes a bean animal over flow.

I have also picked up a 6 month old Vertex Omega 150 to skim the tank.

As for lights I am still stuck. I have found a 10x39w bulb ATI sunpower fixture for sale used. Cheap. Works great
Or I might go with a brand new 8x39w dimmable ATI fixture.

Any thoughts on these two fixtures?


So this is what I have so far. The tank has been ordered,skimmer is on it's way.

Now is time to start looking into a stand build and a sump.

Thank you. It was a pretty rough day for sure. 4 years of work gone in 24 hours.. sad sad. But life must go on! I am very excited to have the new tank built

So the lights are the next step to buy! I could go with a used older ATI 10 bulb system or buy a new ATI 8 bulb fixture that is dimmable. Any thoughts on these options?

A good deal on used equipment is great! But dimmable might be better. I'm not a t5 guy though.. All though I wish I was sometimes.. Lol

I know eh! And the item is from a reef shop so that is even better.. just need to figur out if I want to dim it or not.. Hmmm.

I also was looking at a Kessil A369WE x2 but not sure if I want that when I go full SPS..

Where is that 10x39 ati? I need a 10 bulb t5! Great tank, can't wait to see next build!

Everything was on hold for a couple weeks but..

As of this moment I have the tank and sump

Some corals growing out in my RSM250, just waiting for the new tank!

The lights will be a ATI 8x36" dimmable fixture. The sump also has a built in 5g ATO to hold my fresh water. Now I need to build a stand.

A company called Concept Aquariums out of Calgary, Alberta.
They do a ton of tanks, great service and price.

Can you tell us what you ran on your old tank to have such beautiful sps?

I have a 65 gal tall, I'm new to salt but my goal is sps. Trying to find the simplest most stable plan.

Well as I tell most new people to the reefing world, there are a few things that are most important.

Good lights, clean water and a good skimmer.

A must is to have a RO/DI water unit.. I truly believe this is one reason I had such a great tank. I also did a water change once per month, not even week or 2 weeks.

I would add flow as also being very important for sps. I had a 65 tall and it was one of the hardest tanks to work with when it comes to sps. Anything shorter and wider will help you with your success greatly

I will also agree with this! Flow is key in keeping healthy SPS. I also kept my Phos just above 0. I found if my tank was "too" clean the corals didn't do as well

Really all depends what you want to do and how much you want to spend!! That will work at first. Once your tank is up and running and your SPS is growing you want to think about dosing Alk, Calc and Mg. I started dosing by hand at first and then bought a doser. Love it.. helps keep the tank in check!
