Asking for trouble converting a 55g fresh to sumpless reef?

All that remains in this freshwater tank is one lonely cory catfish. I love the look of the furniture-like stand and tank dimensions in my family room. Am I asking for trouble if I convert this setup to a sumpless reef tank instead of replacing with a new tank designed for saltwater?

I don't see why it would be a problem, most aquariums work for fresh and salt water

Not at all. You can have a very succesful reef tank with no sump.
Things with sumps is they are a convenient way to hide things and add water volume to the system, nothing more. On the other hand, they have some challenges added like return pumps and piping.
You can start a building thread to help you out and watch for that tanks progress.

I don’t think you’ll have too much trouble converting it. Without a sump you’ll have to figure other ways to hide equipment if you want to but it would work.

My only concern would be if you EVER used anything with copper in it to treat the FW tank. There are a number of products that use copper to treat FW tank issues, and that can leech into the silicone.
That would be the only reason I wouldn’t convert FW to SW.
