Just got an ASM g3 and am thinking about modding it
has anyone done the recirculation mod themselves and or have a good how to site they could share

In the process of upgrading to a 125 or 150g tank and am wanting to make sure this skimmer is going to cover it well.
right now it is just stock with a spare pump but was looking into the mesh mod and recirc,
if anyone has any others it would be appreciated

thanks

I would definitely gate valve mod it. I don't think it would be dificult at all to recirc mod it. You would just need a couple uniseals and the pump.

Thanks for the input guys, gate valve done and on the extra pump i have mesh mod done,

anyone have any instructions for the recirculation mod

ok one last question,

found a good site for the recirc mod and a few others on talking reef.

will the g3 be enough skimmer for a 150g tank, 100g sump bin( so proabably 50 gallons) and a frag tank (20l) or should i be in the market for something bigger when i have the money.

I am guessing it should be fine but who knows i know its only rated for about 150g
just thought i would check on opinions and see if anyone else is running one on a similar system.

If the skimmer is rated for 150 gal. and you're running it on a 200+-gal. system, even with a relatively light bioload, it probably won't get the job done. Most skimmers are overrated to begin with and I doubt the G3 is an exception.

well the website says it rated at 250 but as you said they usually overrate them while other similar skimmers that usually underrate theirs say 150, so im hoping that 200 or so would work otherwise ill be in the market for a new skimmer soon and im broke till the new job starts next week, then i have to buy a new house and will be broke again, haha what a cycle.

If it's rated at 250 gal. you're at least in the ballgame. I run G2s on my 65 and 40, both with mesh mods. They're definitely more skimmer than I need, but I've not regretted installing them. Be sure to bore out the air tube on the volute. You'll get much more air volume into the skimmer.

come to find out the guy i bought the skimmer from had dont the drilling on one of the venturi's but i did the second one today, hadnt even thought about it, i did it on my old coralife point of sale 125 and it did wonders when it isnt clogged.

Thanks for the suggestions

Der can you pm me the links of the mods for it. I have seen a few and tried the mesh wheel but the pump wouldnt work.

I did the gatevalve mod and recirc on my Octopus NW-200. I would run the skimmer, before you recirc it and see how your skimmate production is 1st. I regret not doing that with the Octopus. Depending on your bioload, you may not need to do the mod. The mod itself is easy, here is the link on how I modded mine. I did use the ASM site for a guideline;

I have the G3 on my 100gal (75DT + 30sump) system. I have the gate valve and mesh mod. I think the 150 would be pushing it. I would definitely do the recirc mod for that.

Here was the link i found to a guy doing it to a g3

pretty good read much like the other posted

Thanks much for chiming in everyone, i thought i was going to do a 125g tank but I may have found such a good deal on a 150 that i cant pass it up, and the wife is willing, now i just need a house to put it in....I hate moving.

The 150 comes with another skimmer so i may just run the two of them together until i can either sell them or have the money to buy something that can handle the larger system. Was hoping i could get away with it but who knows maybe ill get lucky, right now the bioload would be really light so it may work for long enough.

Thanks again
