Well It seems I have found some asterna stars in my reef, It is a LPS/Zoos, and I have found 5 or 6 stars, 1 of them was roughly the size of a nickle or quarter. Should I panic, or let it ride to see where it goes? I have not seen any polyp damage, or loss of corals, and I do have a red and black star in the tank I want to keep, since my daughter loves it.

Will get mixed opinions on them..some like them (me), and some say remove as they will multiple quickly and our a nuisance

I was thinking about letting it ride till I see a problem, if there is an issue pulling the red and black star and dropping in a harlquin shrimp

From personal experience, I hate them. The only thing they mess with in my tank are zoos. So, I keep SPS now :nerd:

+1

It may be tough to find all of them, to completely remove them.

I recently purchased a harlequin shrimp to thin out the starfish in my tank.

You'll need a fairly large population of these starfish to keep a harlequin shrimp fed or trade it back to the LFS once the job is done.

IMO, I do not like the stars also, not good for the zoas, and they are very hard to get rid of.

I recently took out 100 starfish and there are still quite a few in there. They came in on a leather coral I got about 3 years ago. Its taken that long for them to be annoying enough to do something about it. I didn't want to get the shrimp becuase of my urchin and they need a steady supply of starfish to stay healthy. They don't hurt anything in the tank and probably just eat algae so i don't worry about them too much. I kept the dried up starfish. Is that weird?

Interesting thoughts here, but I have never seen one on a SPS or LPS coral.
They have been noted to start on algae and move over to coral.. usually the dark colored ones....

I myself have never had an issue on hards other than them seeming to clean around the edges of the coral and rock or frag plug.
But that could also be new coral meat that they are eating.

Zoas - yes, I have seen they climb over them and sit there sucking the life out of them... just my two cents.

I pick them out, I'm pretty sure they were attacking my zoas, after that my zoas looked better? Coincidence??? I don't think so
I knew I had them but it was when my zoas started closing up with no reason. I researched what it can be... Only to find that these were one of them!

Ive got truck loads of them in my tank, with no issues. I leave mine alone.

I don't like those little suckers. They reproduce quickly then hide in the rocks. I always remove them when I see them.

The Harlequin would not be a perminant addition to the tank.

I didn't get a pic of it, and I can't find it in the tank now, when it shows itself again, I will snap a pic

I did not take this photo, but this is what it looked like on the rocks.
star1.jpg

5 even legs, webbing similar to a bat star, and size was somewhere between nickle and quarter sized. The smaller ones (I have seen 5 or 6) are the size of a pencil eraser
