Hey all, yesterday I went to my lfs to get some snails and picked up 1 trochus and 2 astrea snails. When I got home I started the drip acclimation process and out of curiosity I tested the salinity of their water and it was at 1.031 which shocked me because this place is a pretty reputable place around here. Anyway, my tank is at 1.024 so it took a while to get them to match (about an hour and a half) during this time the trochus was moving around and the astrea were suctioned to the bucket but not moving. I put them in the tank finally and the trochus was active right away but the astrea didn't move and haven't moved since. Is there a way to tell if they're dead? Did they just acclimate poorly? They aren't suctioned to the rock I placed them on so I'm starting to worry. Any help is greatly appreciated!

did you yank it off the bucket? might possibly killed it by pulling it off too quickly.
Do a sniff test and if smell funky, then toss it out. If not give it another day.
There wasn't too much resistance and they came off fairly easily, just pulled gently until they let go, but I'll give em a sniff when I get home :)

They could be acclimating to your tank. They will definitely have smell when they die. Also, check for pyramid snails on the bottom of the snail shell. We've had some lathargic astrea snails and found parasitic snails attached. Heres a pic of a snail with pyramids my wife found.

Just got home and they're both attached to a rock, not moving really but at least they're alive
I heard that they do more work at night so hopefully I'll be impressed in the morning lol

Will a dead snail stay attached to a rock? I’ve been wondering the same thing about mine. I can’t find them. I’m assuming all the hermits and shrimp would congregate to a dead snail but the hermits and shrimp are out and about.

No a snail will not stay attached after they die.

You will also have a few days to “flip” a snail that hasnt righted itself if its fallen. As longas nothing in the tank has started to try to eat it first in the vulnerable position.
