I had a hob skimmer for less than a year and didnt like how it looked on the back so I sold it. The only filtration I had was an aquaclear 500 that I seldom put carbon in. I mainly had thr filter for a sponge and filter floss.
If you look at the bottom photo right around the middle I had a small tuft at the time of the photo. Water changes were a must with this tank and when I slacked you could definitely tell.
My local fish store had a large bin with sand and fish and that's where I got my sand the live rock was live when I got it
So yes i started with seeded rock and sand.
Far as my frag catalog goes I prefer spending money on multiple frags than 1 colony.
For fish I think there was a yellow tang, mono, melanurus wrasse and a chromis and for a short time had dwarf lionfish.
