Hi everyone

I have ATC refractometer and I just used for few times. The reading (blue line) of the refractometer is not straight, which the left side is lower than the right side. The line shows as / (it’s not straight)

Can anyone tell me why it is like this? I never dropped my refractometer.

It could be defective - but I'm curious as to how 'straight' or not it is. - ie is one side 1.025 and the other 1.027 or is a minuscule difference.

is the hinge freely mobile (this can cause problems If not)

Have you calibrated it with 35 solution?

Not a straight line. One side 1.026 sg and one side 38ppt
Yes I have calibrated it. It worked perfectly before for the first few times.

it must be defective somehow. Do you have another method to check with reading is correct?

The problem is that the line is not lined up correct with the chart. The refractometers are put together in two different parts and you can unscrew them at the middle between where the metal and the handle starts you just need to look into the end and twist it one way or the other to like it back up.

Yes I assumed that.

You.may have not dropped it but someone else might have knocked it onto the floor.

Just buy another one.

Heck I have two. Well until the plastic flap broke off the one.

Spend the $35 at BRS.
DONE

I quit using those as they are poor quality and never hold calibration. I was calibrating before and after using them and they'd change in that little time. Red seas was the worst. I finally spent the money on tropic Marin glass hydrometer that is calibrated and can't become uncalibrated unless you break it.
