figured I would post this here. I being new to the hobby purchased API marine water test kits. For the last 4 weeks I have been freaking out over nitrates in my two tanks. Readings at 160ppm but everything in tank looked great. Fat happy fish. I even started nopoxing 2 weeks ago. With no change in tests results today, it just didn’t feel right. So I ordered a NYOS nitrate kit and thank god my levels are in 20 to 25 in both tanks still a little high but at least I know where I am at now. Spend a little more on the kits.

This is a great reminder about the importance of high quality test kits. Although buying a test kit may not seem as exciting as buying a new frag, fish, or piece of electronics - water quality is foundational to any saltwater or reef keeping system. IMO, other quality test kits include Salifert, Red Sea, and Hanna.

It is best to have a quality test kit. But with even having a quality test kit I believe that have another test kit or getting a ICP test so you can test against what you are currently testing with is important as well. IMO you cant just buy a quality test kit and let it get old in the closet for months or even years (Like we have all done) and then expect to take it out again and it give you great results. So I believe having a 2nd opinion is key and an ICP test is a great tool for doing that.
