Atlantic Pygmy Ocotpus

I +1 everyone saying keep an octopus with extreme caution. Not only are they predators, but they are frighteningly intelligent. There's tons of stories of them sneaking out into other tanks across rooms, feasting and returning. They can swim, climb, crawl, fit through tiny openings and camouflage.
Octopuses are pretty much the T-1000s of the sea.

I had an octo in a 20 gallon tank when I was around 12. It came in as a pregnant female, she lasted from August to Halloween, she laid her eggs probably early October, they hatched over several days and were in the tank for a day or two before they disappeared. My mom contacted the New England Aquarium and they suggested newly hatched brine shrimp for raising babies.

Overall she was a model citizen, ate all the crabs that I had collected over the summer. She did tussle with the spiny boxfish I had in the tank, so that went back to the LFS. She could have easily escaped...I was using a HOB filter with the standard Pen Plax lid....it was 1982. I got lucky that she never escaped, maybe inked once and spent most her time in a conch shell.

How does that work since an octopus release ink? Consistent and a lot of water changes?
They only ink if frightened and the one I got today is very tiny so I doubt he can release a lot but I’m going to setup a skimmer soon for that. His ten gallon below was just put together over the last two hours from rocks in my established 55 and 75, he is tucked very far into the shell in the front of the tank atm. I’m sitting here waiting for him to emerge

oh! also not all of them try to escape but it’s better to have a lid or fine screen (I have cloth that’s used for screen doors) covering the whole top

This was in the store this morning. My finger was right in front of the camera and the critter keeper was about 6 inches from the glass so you can see just how small he is :)

Just finished watching My Octopus Teacher on Netflix. It was by far the most informational and moving movie / documentary I've seen about a single oceandweller. It is truly a heartfelt and gut-wrenching. The end is actually difficult to watch, once you see the life experiences of that octopus.

If you have not seen it yet, watch it at your first opportunity I'll never forget it
