I am looking for solutions for what I am experiencing with my ATO tank. The tank is 28 gallons approximately 3 feet high. I filled it half way the first time I used it and it worked fine. However I filled it to the top and now my aqua lifter pump does not stop running or prevent water from passing through. How can I get the water to stop refilling when the float switch turns of the pump? I unplugged the pump and it continues to run. Therefore the float is fine.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE SOME SORT OF A SIPHONING ISSUE. IS THE ATO SITTING ABOVE YOUR TANK?

I use a aqualifter to move the topoff water from my ato container to my sump.
I mounted the aqualifter higher than both the topoff container and the sump.
Don't seem to have that problem.

Open up the aqualifter and reseat the little flapper valves located under the diaphragms

With a 36" reservoir on the same level as your sump, you would need to have the water outlet located above your display. Put it above the water line in your overflow. Alternatively you could place a piece of pvc pipe in your sump to the highest level possible (just under the tank) and only fill the reservoir to below that level.

That pvc is simply to elevate the end of the outlet tubing above the top of the ATO reservoir.

Thanks everyone for your assistance. I moved the pump and the fill line above the tank and for now it seem to be okay. Thanks
