I'm currently cycling my first sw tank and reading all these threads about ato systems and I'm thinking "Well there goes another $150!" And who looks forward to the disaster when it fails and dumps gallons on the floor?

But wait! What if I were to place a small discreet strip of tape on the back of the tank at the desired water level and check it daily? When the water level appears low I'll grab a nearby gallon jug of RO water and refill.

OK, so tell me why this is terrible idea.

You would need to top off manually everyday and it will eventually be a pain to do so in longer run. Specially when you would be out on vacation. I did that for a month myself when I started my sw tank but then made a DIY ATO following the below link. It's been 2year and works like a charm.

Check this out and its very easy to setup-

I use to do the same thing lol until I got mine and I’ll tell ya what I definitely recommend getting one. This is the one I got and have never had a problem. Don’t even question it IMO
