I have a 40 breeder and I don’t have a hob filter or a sump that I can put the ato in. I will be running wavemakers also. I was thinking of using the smart ato micro because I have had great experience with it and it has a good price. However, being that this is 40 gallons, would that ato even work? And should it be fine with the waves? If you have a better suggestion please let me know. Thanks

The Smart Micro is plenty powerful enough for a 40 and will work fine with your wavemakers. Just put the sensor in the quietest area you can. Once you see how the turbulence affects the set point, slide it up or down to get the desired water level. You should not have to touch it again after that.

I agree with @SDK. I have the Smart ATO and I think it should work well for you in this application.

So the micro has a big enough pump?

I had a lot of success using an xp aqua duetto on my 40 breeder. Optical sensor was small enough to hide under the rim which was the biggest selling poi t for me originally.

I run DIY atos on all my tanks. If you're comfortable working with electrical components, it's an affordable and customizable way to go. I spent $20 + pump cost on mine!

Nope. I would never diy something that critical. I’m just not comfortable with diy.
My thinking though was the bigger tanks evaporate more water than smaller ones. I wanted to make sure it was not constantly on trying to top of the water
