ATO on a mechanical timer

I just picked up and installed a MagTool MT-360P ATO. My question is, if I run it on a mechanical timer does it impede its ability to "learn"?

It probably relearns each time it is reset. Why do you want it on a timer?

I heard it acts as a fail safe to prohibit overfilling due to potential mechanical failure. I have inquired also to the manufacturer.
