well when I setup my tank in june or July I bought a tsunami ATO and an Octopus pump. Well I installed a glass-holes.com overflow.

Well I have had some "gurgling" since I installed the overflow box. It wasnt a horrible gurgling sound but it was present and seemed to get worse when the water level would get below the return pump top. Finally pulled the ATO out of the packaging yesterday (pump and ATO) and installed a 5 gallon bucket with ro/di water from work (stuff has like .005ppb when it comes to nutrients and like 0 bugs basically the BEST ro/di system on the planet). I set it to the water level I want it for the high mark. Since doing this I can barely tell if the tank is running. So my best guess is that my noise issue was coming from lack of water volume in the sump. before I would add like 1.5 gallons of water at a time. Now it adds like .1-.2 gallons of water at a time :D.

So needless to say water volume DOES matter in yer sump :D.

If the overflow isn't vented, gurgling can occur by forcing water out the bottom, or sucking air from the drain.

New overflows are very loud when first plumbed. After a week, they calm down considerably.. I'm guessing do to the film built up inside.

I have glassholes overflows and they are silent too. Well pleased.

it is vented. I have tried moving that air tube up down left right and however I can move it and I always had gurgling. At least until I started keeping the water level quite a few inch's above the return pump. My guess is when the water started getting low that the pump started "surging" which was what was causing the gurgling sound.
