this might be over kill for my set up but I like the idea of helping make sure the salinity is stable.

I just have a 40 gal FOWLR tank but have been thinking about putting a ato system on it with a 2-5 gallon reservoir below.

My question is...should I? Also is there any danger in having water just sitting in the reservoir for a period of time?

Also if you think I should go for it why type of jug should I get for this and any suggestion on where to get it?

Thank you

Stable salinity isn't just important for corals salinity swings can affect some delicate fish as well, not sure if you have any but it also means you don't have to check the tank for water every so often... Regarding the container it can be literally anything you can fit a pump or get a tube into.. I recommend it has a lit or something to avoid any contamination but the water shouldn't go bad you'll use it up before then...

I run a Tunze Osmolator as my ATO and I love it. I have it hooked up to a 5G jug from the LFS and it lasts nearly 7+ days topping off a 40b with a 20H sump. Saturday AM I hook up my RODI unit and fill it up. Never worry about it again!

Haha just trying to help out where i can! I would do more research on it though before spending money on it... if it makes the hobby easier for you why not, Happy Reefkeeping and hopefully you have more questions

I have found that dog food storage containers from pet stores make good ATO reservoirs. They can be purchased in many different sizes and they all have plastic lids which can be drilled to allow the tubing and pump power supply.

adding an ATO was the best thing I ever did. Makes keeping a tank much easier and enjoyable. My wife hates it when the sump gets low and starts making the water fall sound.
